“The Bicycle Vibration of Dacheng” 2024
DIY public instrument : bicycles, coconut shells, bread leaves, used speakers,
acrylic, media players, used batteries, wires, bamboo, hot melt glue.
The project is part of “Play with Nature” Earth Art Festival 2024
curated by Yen-Chen,Wang/ Lala, assistance by Star, Phoebe.
organized by Dacheng Art Experimental Elementary School.
at Dacheng, Xinpi Township, Taiwan.
As part of a creative collaboration with students from the Dacheng Art Experimental Elementary School, this project reimagines bicycles as public musical instruments. Two donated bicycles were transformed using everyday objects—speakers, coconut shells, old motorcycle batteries, and foraged wood—into kinetic sound sculptures. The compositions include ambient sounds recorded from nature around the Dacheng area, allowing the bicycles to carry both movement and melody through the streets.
"The bicycles donated by local residents were like empty vinyl records at first. Since Arnont visited Da-Cheng, these objects have gradually turned into this vinyl record, day by day, through the involvement of students and people. The melody and sound reflect what we are naturally playing together. The motion of the bicycle is like the operation of vinyl record players, creating noisy, overlapping vibrations. As we explore the Earth's layers, overlapping layer by layer, when we are riding the bicycle that we can hear how each layer connects, feeling the vibrations of “Playing with Nature (of Mind)” in Dacheng"
Arnont is interested in exploring the overall environment of Dacheng by listening to the sound of people interacting with nature - birds, small creatures, trees, humans, and objects. He records these sounds using bicycles as a medium, creating a sonic record of Da-Cheng through sound field recordings and workshop. Following the concept of Public Instruments, He collaborates with students, using local materials for the creations. This initiative is part of a project called "Gentle But Make Noise" (GBMN)
workshop.
